Madrean Archipelago Biodiversity Assessment
Sky Island Alliance has begun a multi-year project to inventory wildlife and plants in several Sky Islands of Northern Sonora. There is a dearth of information on species distributions and other natural history about the region.
This project is named the Madrean Archipelago Biodiversity Assessment or MABA for short. Well known botonist and herper Tom Van Devender is heading up this effort for SIA. Aaron Flesch is partnering with SIA to provide breeding bird, as well as habitat and plant distribution info.
SIA will also attempt to define the Sky Island region and which mountain ranges will be included as "official" madrean Sky Islands.
As part of the MABA effort all flora and fauna data is being entered into an online searchable database. Construction of these sites is ongoing, but they are functional now. They are accessable to the public at madrean.org/maba/symbflora and madrean.org/maba/symbiota.
